Best on-air community service: JOEL WEISS

Best on-air community service

It felt like a knife in the ear when news came in of a pink slip for longtime Tampa radio personality Joel Weiss. The WSUN-97.1FM music director served the station and Tampa Bay for 13 great years. He was a champion for local artists, who likely flipped their shit upon hearing their song on the radio alongside some of the country’s more mainstream alternative acts. Weiss remained upbeat, though, writing that he’d lived his dream. “I’m grateful I had that chance,” he wrote on Instagram after being blindsided with the news, “even if the ending wasn’t happy.” We’re sure he’ll have a new gig by the time this sees ink, and we can’t wait to see what he does next. —Ray Roa
