Best production of a modern classic: THE MAIDS, JOBSITE THEATER

Best production of a modern classic

Jean Genet’s classic play is about role-playing and power, and how masochism is born when the oppressed internalize the domination of those who stand over them. This is a hard play to stage without falling into some sort of sexual misunderstanding, but the wonderful Jobsite Theater production, featuring Katrina Stevens, Georgia Mallory Guy and Roxanne Fay, was as sharp and knowing as anyone could want. Genet, who was a thief and prostitute as well as playwright and novelist, understood something about the architecture of the lower depths; in this stunning play, he laid it out for all to see. Thanks to Jobsite, we did. —Mark Leib
