Funniest comedy: SPAMALOT, AMERICAN STAGE IN THE PARK

Funniest comedy

This hilarious laughfest had more gags per minute than Saturday Night Live, and more visual jokes than a pile of Mad magazines. King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table (which turned out to be TV’s Wheel of Fortune) set out from Merrie England (not Finland, as it happened) to face the terrible Knights Who Say Ni!, the Black Knight who fought after all his limbs were hacked off, the French Taunters (“I fart in your general direction!”) and the scene-stealing Lady of the Lake. And all this occurred during a surprisingly intelligent encounter with the Arthur legend and the story of the Holy Grail. Why shouldn’t there be Las Vegas showgirls in a pageant from the 10TH century? Ni! —Mark Leib
