Most outrageously ambitious, visually beautiful production of a loooong American masterpiece: TAMPA REP’S THE ICEMAN COMETH

Most outrageously ambitious, visually beautiful production of a loooong American masterpiece

You’ve got to hand it to C. David Frankel, artistic director of Tampa Rep. He took a seldom-produced five-hour play by Eugene O’Neill and gave it a first-class production (curtain at 7, finale after midnight) that stridently displayed all the drama’s visual beauties, narrative redundancies, philosophical integrity and dramaturgical excess. Some of the tableaux were as expressive as anything by Edward Hopper or Charles Bukowski, and most of the acting (in a 19-actor cast, led by the remarkable Ned Averill-Snell) was consistently inspired.
