Best preventable environmental nightmare: LAKE-O RELEASES

Best preventable environmental nightmare

Imagine you lived in a state where a major lake has become a cesspool of agricultural wastewater, and when storms nearly make the lake overflow, authorities opted to pump the nasty water out to the coast. There, fertilizer-ridden water is causing toxic algae blooms that threaten wildlife and tourism. Well, that’s the current state of affairs with Lake Okeechobee. Environmentalists and others say the state ought to buy up Big Sugar land south of the lake, to clean it and send it down through the Everglades — the water’s natural path. Rick Scott’s plan? He wants Obama to build a bigger wall around the lake… And make Mexico pay for it, too, probably. Why not? —KB
