BEST BLACK AND WHITE WONDER: Linda Connor: Gravity

"Once the Ocean Floor"

Works about spirituality rarely project a spiritual aura themselves, but Connor’s black and white photographs of sacred sites around the world seem to be the exception. Engulfed in darkness, the weight of these large masses of rock are juxtaposed against the weightlessness of an ungrounded perspective. Her “Once the Ocean Floor” series separates religion from spirituality with monumental boulders as stand-ins for towering cathedrals, allowing for a more universal shelter to harness inner tranquility.  —Caitlin Albritton
