BEST COSTUME DESIGNER: Frank Chavez

BEST COSTUME DESIGNER

Watching freeFall’s Judy Garland play End of the Rainbow, you could be excused for thinking you’d wandered into one of those Broadway hits of the 1950s in which everyone dressed elegantly and sipped vodka martinis. The reason for your error would be Chavez’s canny costuming, which was also on fine display in Stageworks’ The Aliens, a very different play in which outcast Derrick Phillips wore a knit cap and mismatched clothes, and the other characters’ clothes were equally pathetic. Chavez always gets it right — he did it again in American Stage’s Tartuffe — and acts as set designer sometimes too. He was easily this year’s best. —Mark Leib
