BEST SET DESIGNER: Jerid Fox

BEST SET DESIGNER

Fox designed several shows this season, but his most attractive sets were probably those for Tartuffe and Wonderful Life, both at American Stage. For Tartuffe, Fox brought us the enclosed courtyard of an upscale house such as you might find on the Tampa Bay side of Westshore Blvd., featuring a small pool and a winding staircase leading up to an ample balcony. For the “radio” version of Wonderful Life, there were old-style microphones, windows behind which snow was falling, an “Applause” sign, an oriental rug, and a visually busy area for creating sound effects. Add his pop art Hairspray set and you’ve got the most memorable environments in any of our theaters. —Mark Leib
