Best crying with Grandpa: PAUL SIMON AT AMALIE ARENA

It’s true, Paul Simon is old enough to be my grandpa, and in the weeks before our Best of the Bay issue coming to life, the 76-year-old welcomed three generations of fans to Amalie Arena for his farewell tour. Seeing one of America’s greatest living songwriters comes with a certain set of expectations, but Simon, with the help of his magnificent backing band yMusic, exceeded all of those and even elicited a few teardrops with a particularly moving rendition of “René and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War,” which found Simon swimming in the sweet, swelling sounds of bowed cello and violin, flute, trumpet and bass clarinet. Damn Grandpa, why do you have to go and leave us now? —RR
