Best evidence that art is in the eye of the beholder: THE REACTION TO CATHY SALUSTRI’S COLUMN ON THE JAMES MUSEUM

Best evidence that art is in the eye of the beholder

Last spring, after attending a tour of the new James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art in St. Petersburg, CL Arts & Entertainment Editor Cathy Salustri wrote a bold and personal story about her visceral reaction to the collection’s more, er, problematic depictions of American Indians, and the lack of context given works created during a, shall we say, less enlightened time. Public reaction to the piece was as divided as our current political climate; many loudly decried Salustri’s position as “too PC,” while others agreed with it. She might’ve pissed some people off, but it provided inspiring proof that many of us here in the Bay area are passionate about our art, and what it means to us individually. —Scott Harrell
