Best local revival of an ancient medium: GAINOR ROBERTS’ GENESIS SERIES IN EGG TEMPERA

Best local revival of an ancient medium

Gainor Roberts isn’t the first person to paint in egg tempera. The original egg tempera artists were the ancient Egyptians. Before oil paints were invented, artists mixed egg yolks with pigments to create paint. Then, when the 20th century rolled around, a select few contemporary artists starting working in egg tempera. Still, egg tempera is kind of a rare bird. This is why we’re lucky to have local artist Gainor Roberts, obsessively mixing egg yolks and pigments to use in her artwork. Her Genesis series, a collection of fruit and vegetable portraits in egg tempera, is on display at the Dunedin Fine Art Center through October 15. —Jennifer Ring
