Best show nobody saw: GAELYNN LEA AT THE ATTIC AT ROCK BROTHERS

The Attic at Rock Brothers has quickly become one of the best listening rooms in Tampa Bay (it’s certainly the best one in Ybor City), and its programming has been eclectic to say the least. In the last year, it’s hosted jazz legends, ‘90s rockers, country singers, comedians, hip-hop album release parties, house music… you get the point. This show found NPR’s second-ever Tiny Desk Concerts contest winner Gaelynn Lea, a classically trained violinist and disability representation activist, teasing songs from a new album Learning How to Stay for all of maybe 20 people. And that’s shame, because it was one of the most arresting and emotive performances we saw this year. Duds are inevitable, but let’s not sleep on shows like this anymore, K? violinscratches.com. —RR
