Best final concert from a local legend: Chick Corea at Ruth Eckerd Hall

Chick Corea at Ruth Eckerd Hall

There was no way to know they’d be his final shows, but jazz giant Chick Corea spent two nights last October welcoming fans back to the live music setting with covers (Stevie Wonder’s “Overjoyed,” in the style of Thelonious Monk), plus runs through work inspired by classical icons (Friedrich Gulda), tributes to Corea’s mentors (Bud Powell) and performances of his new “Portraits” game where he picks people in the crowd and composes a tune about them on the spot. He died on Feb. 9 as a result of a rare form of cancer, which his team said “was only discovered very recently.” We’ll miss everything about Chick, and we’re grateful he shared his final set with Tampa Bay.
