Best new art collective: New Roots Art Collective

New Roots Art Collective

Tampa artists Melvin “LANGSTN” Halsey Jr., Indie Reece, Ron Simmons, and Briauna Walker formed the collective in summer 2020 amidst nationwide protests for racial justice. While most of us hibernated in our homes, New Roots artists made new work and looked for ways to increase Black representation in the arts. Tony Krol introduced us to them first. But due to the pandemic, much of Tampa Bay didn’t discover New Roots Art Collective for another year. In July 2021, HCC Dale Mabry’s Gallery 221 hosted the group’s first art exhibition, “Root’d.” Together, New Roots’ work reflects on the artists’ shared roots, current events and a positive vision for the future. And let's always celebrate the gorgeous Harriet Tubman shipping container New Roots helped bring to life in Ybor Heights.
