Best player of reed instruments: David Pate

David Pate

In the argot of musicians, Pate is a motherfucker. His main horn is tenor saxophone, and he plays it with an athletic brilliance rooted in several decades of relentless practice and performance. He also plays soprano sax, clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, alto flute, piccolo, and can work his way around baritone and alto saxes when necessary. Pate’s main outlet is jazz, but he’s been an adjunct member of the Florida Orchestra, played in the Zappa tribute band Bogus Pomp, and was part of the full orchestra that backed The Who on its most recent tour, which hit Amalie Arena. He even took a piss in the same row of stalls as Pete Townshend during rehearsals.
