We’ve seen Over the Edge, Purple Rain and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou all get the Reel Deal treatment, with bands performing the film soundtracks on the Crowbar stage directly after screenings are held in the courtyard-turned-impromptu movie theater.
I can’t think of a more apropos pairing or more soul satisfying way to spend a Thursday night in November (a mere week before Thanksgiving) than at the fifth installment of the monthly series presented by Brokenmold Entertainment and Pabst Blue Ribbon: watching The Last Waltz, then hanging around to witness fine local folk rock stalwarts Have Gun, Will Travel churn out the entire setlist performed by The Band in Martin Scorsese’s iconic concert film documenting their farewell concert. The most exciting part? HGWT will be joined by a gaggle of local and Orlando area musical guests that will assume the roles of those musicians that sat in with The Band nearly four decades ago.
So far, confirmed acts include Matt E. Lee (Poetry 'n Lotion) and Ed Stork (Chase Theory) take on keys-playing duties ala Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson, HGWT mando player Andy Brey and Kenny Pullin (d'Visitors, Poetry n' Lotion) provide horns, and former Groves frontman Justin Brown starts the cycle of special guests as Ronnie "the Hawk" Hawkins on "Who Do You Love." Mark Etherington (RedFeather, Mountain Holler, set and setting) sits in as Neil Young, and singing off stage with him and returning later to do a song of her own is Y Los Dos Pistoles former Shae Krispinsky as Joni Mitchell. "The Weight" will feature Eugene Snowden (of The Legendary JC's) as Pops Staples, and Kaleigh Baker and Monica Delgado (Hotbox, Gwan Massive) take on Mavis and Yvonne Staples, respectively.
*UPDATE: Aaron Lepley (November Foxtrot Whiskey, Funny Bunny) is assuming the role of Neil Diamond, Ernie Locke (Nervous Turkey) is taking on Muddy Waters, guitarist/singer Shawn Kyle (who produced their latest album Science from an Easy Chair) sits in as Eric Clapton, and Thomas Wynn (of Thomas Wynn & the Believers) does his best Van Morrison. So who's playing Emmylou Harris and Bob Dylan? That would be Ms. Rebekah Pulley and Mr. Will Quinlan, respectively! Whew! That is some talent-filled rather fantastic bill. Reel Deal Thursday: The Last Waltz happens on Thurs., Nov. 19, at Crowbar, 1812 N. 17th St., Ybor City.
