Cafe Kili: A great university area alternative to Starbucks

The iced caramel latte was unlike any cold coffee drink I have ever had before. It wasn't too strong, had a smooth texture, the sweetness was perfect (the whipped cream on top was also great), and it was enjoyable to the last drop. I found myself savoring it and sad when I reached the bottom. On other visits I have also tried their Iced Cafe Mocha (pictured), which rivals the Caramel Latte, but still loses in sweetness, having a slightly more bitter taste. However, it was still enjoyable.

[image-1]The shrimp corn bisque was also quite a delight and I regretted not having a bowl instead of a cup after I tasted the enjoyable flavor of their soup. It was sweet as a bisque should be, but not too powerful.

To top it all off they offer Wi-Fi to customers and plenty of power extensions, which I quickly used to record my thoughts on my experience. Although the cafe shop was slow when I visited, I soon learned that they also have busy nights with live music on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Sandwiches, breads, and pastries are also on their menu, though I have yet to try them. On another visit I learned that they also have a 10% USF student discount (with your student ID), so there is another reason to stop visiting the overcrowded and loud Starbucks by school and to visit Cafe Kili instead.

Cafe Kili is a hidden gem near USF that has quickly become my new favorite spot to study, as well as relax and enjoy some coffee and soup.

I visited Cafe Kili mid afternoon one day on the recommendation of a friend. Located behind Applebee's on Fowler Avenue, only a few minutes from the University of South Florida. I made many visits to the plaza where Cafe Kili is situated and never noticed that such an establishment existed. One memorable visit with world-class service and quality drinks and food made me a regular customer.

When I entered I found a very quiet cafe with a few customers here and there. Statues of zebras and many African themes were spread throughout the shop, it inspires a cozy feeling like you are visiting someones home, but they happen to have a shop right inside their house.

A little nervous to order, I came up to the register and a young man helped me as I described to him that I am not a huge coffee drinker and prefer something sweet, but not too sweet. I have a bad habit of drenching coffee drinks from other coffee shops  in sugar and sweeteners because drinks in those places never taste quite right to me. After a few minutes of questioning, the employee recommended the iced caramel latte ($3.25) to me and I decided to also try a cup of their soup of the day, shrimp corn bisque ($2.95). The level of customer service I received was fantastic, giving them brownie points in my book even before I'd tasted their product.
