Cru Cellars wines and dines

Jen and Torrey Bingham are owners of this charming, down-to-earth wine bar and shop. Jen has an extensive wine background, despite her young age. By age 23, she was already Wine Director at Que Syrah Fine Wines, a small wine production boutique in Chicago. Even bigger success ensued during her role as Wine Director at ENO. With her guidance and management, ENO transitioned into one of Chicago’s most happening wine bars. When the “windy city” became too windy and cold for Jen and Torrey, they decided to move to Tampa and open their own wine shop.

Cru Cellars began as a retail wine shop, but eventually expanded to include a wine bar. But the expansion plans do not end there. Word is, in the spring, a wall will be knocked down in the wine bar to make room for the patio being built. If all goes according to plan, you will soon be able to enjoy your favorite glass of wine, and perhaps Roasted Bone Marrow with Roasted Garlic, while simultaneously enjoying a balmy spring evening.

Cru Cellars sells wines, cheeses, charcuterie, and now food items. Over 350 bottles of small production wines adorn the wine room. These are not the same caliber as chain liquor store varieties of wine, either. If you’re looking for quality wine on a budget, the $13 and under wine display will quench your thirst.

Cru Cellars, a local wine bar and shop, recently launched a food menu to accompany their wide selection of small production wine. Owner and Certified Sommelier Jen Bingham teamed up with In Bloom Catering and Creative Food Concepts to create a menu most complementary to the wines. Not only that, but this local catering business favors organic foods, so many of Cru Cellars’ menu selections include organic ingredients. However, these selections were created merely to accompany the wine, not outshine it. So, wine is still the superstar.

Sometimes you just need a glass of wine, and in mid-swig, your stomach rumbles, as mine did during my recent visit to Cru Cellars. While nursing my glass of La Craie Vouvray, I was struck with a craving for fresh vegetables and seafood. (What can I say? I’m a health nut.) Salpicon of Chilled Shrimp and Avocado salad certainly did the trick. Citrus vinaigrette was the perfect dressing, providing a light, lemony flavor, which made the enormous Florida rock shrimp that much better.
