Susan King got really into it. After winning a brew-your-own beer auction item at the annual Island Night benefit for LifePath Hospice in 2015, King — a recipient of LifePath's compassionate care for her mother and father and now an involved volunteer — collaborated with Tampa-based Six Ten Brewing to create Evil Princess, a lemongrass rye pale ale.
She dreamed up the special brew's name and logo (with help from an artist pal of hers in Kansas City, Missouri) just for fun. But her enthusiasm ended up snowballing into a LifePath fundraiser last year.
Since winning the auction item again at the 2016 Island Night, King and Six Ten have decided to brew a full batch of Evil Princess due to its popularity, offering kegs to more than 20 bars and restaurants. Translation: The pale ale is available around town throughout the month, in addition to its appearance at the Six Ten release party, planned from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday during Beer & Bingo.
Patrons can expect King, who's hosting the release party, to be decked out in her Evil Princess outfit (which she'll also wear for the Brew Bus Local Loop on Sunday), as well as T-shirt and Six Ten giveaways.
"I think people understand the importance of hospice care, but it's much easier for people to fully support when there is a festive activity [that allows them] to donate to a great cause — like beer," King said. "Not to mention the beer is great."
A portion of the pint proceeds benefit LifePath Hospice no matter where you drink, so go taste one for yourself. Here's a full list of participating locals with the beer on tap:
