Five Courses: St. Pete says "far out" with Funky Sweets and more

Mini doughnuts and funnel cakes are driving a new ‘70s-style dessert shop in St. Petersburg. But these aren’t your fancy variety.

Opened at 11024 Fourth St. N. May 20, Funky Sweets’ made-to-order creations are straightforward: hot and fresh — that’s it. Funnel cakes come in two sizes (8 inches or the 3-inch kids order), while the doughnuts are featured five ways, ranging from orders of six to 125. Eight flavors of Working Cow ice cream, including butter pecan and Superman, are also on hand.

The shop, whose interior design matches its groovy theme (there’s a nod to Anchorman’s Ron Burgundy or two), has plans to experiment with other desserts like deep-fried Oreos and Twinkies.


• Ever heard of a “craft wings bar?” Yep, in (only in?) Tampa.

A bar and grill called Patio 6 has started dishing specialty wings at 9648 W. Linebaugh Ave. The Westchase hangout does up its stems and flappers in six signature styles, along with 26 other jazzy offerings including spicy maple bourbon, Creole honey mustard, Crown Royal apple cheesecake and even the seasonal, dare I say it, pumpkin spice.

Burgers, sliders, wraps and sandwiches round out the fare, and a second menu for the 2,500-square-foot outdoor patio includes buffalo chicken tenders, crab cakes, salads and meals for kids ages 6 and under. A full bar and live music are Patio 6’s other highlights.

Kozuba & Sons Distillery

• St. Pete’s second distillery, Kozuba & Sons, is scheduled to hold its grand opening celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony from 4 to 7 p.m. June 23. The public is invited to down complimentary tastings and refreshments while exploring the Polish family-run distillery’s facility at 1960 Fifth Ave. S. in the Warehouse Arts District. Vodka, fruit liqueurs and rye whisky are some of the Kozuba & Sons line’s products.

In conjunction with the St. Pete Chamber and Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber, Mayor Rick Kriseman will host the ribbon cutting, starting at 5:15 p.m.


Tropical Island Fruits & Subs has launched in Tampa’s Pebble Creek Collection plaza. The Middle Eastern spot at 19651 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. specializes in fresh fruit juices and sandwiches — falafel, pastrami, corn beer and cheesesteak among them. There’s also a selection of salads to choose from.


• In downtown St. Pete, the rebranded Fortunato’s on Central can now be found inside the 660 Central Ave. space last home to Central Deli. The Italian deli and pizzeria, not far from other pizza destinations like Tony’s and Angelo’s, continues to showcase hot and cold subs, burgers, wings, stromboli and New York-style pies, as well as breakfast, beer and wine. Temple Terrace saw the opening of Pacific Fiesta Market at 10944 N. 56th St., which carries Filipino-Asian and international groceries. And carne asada, margaritas and other Mexican favorites are featured at 12950 Race Track Road through Tampa’s Señor Tequila Mexican Grill.
