Nonprofit Reach St. Pete has acquired a city bus—thanks to the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA)—to transform into a mobile grocery in an effort to provide Pinellas citizens with access to fresh food.
Reach St. Pete has spent the last five years working to prevent and alleviate homelessness, low-income and at-risk situations in Pinellas.
The goal of the mobile grocery store is split into three parts, according to a press release—direct access, food affordability and community awareness. By partnering with local organizations, the nonprofit can bring awareness to the needs that exist in the area. From there, donations are made and underserved communities gain access to the food they need.
If you’re interested in donating, you can do so here. Reach St. Pete’s goal is to have the bus up and running in 2022, and you can keep up with the latest on their Facebook and Instagram (@reachstpete).
The news comes as SunState Yoga continues its own initiative to support its partnership with Reach St. Pete with monthly yoga sessions. The woman-owned Baptiste yoga studio started offering a donation-based outdoor class on the last Sunday of every month at Flora Wylie Park. Donations were made to benefit Reach, and participants were also encouraged to donate hygiene items. To date, the class has raised more than $2,000, collected hundreds of hygiene items and volunteered at Reach.
