Batter up. It's that time of year, Bay area bakers.

The Morean Arts Center's Fourth Annual Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest will return Saturday, Aug. 16. Registration is open for participants, and anyone can compete.

Contestants need to fill out an entry form and liability waiver, as well as pay a $15 entry fee, and submit them to the Morean. The registration deadline is Aug. 14. However, turn in the fees and forms as soon as possible because this year's registration will be capped.

Multiple submissions are permitted, but each flavor will need a separate registration form and fee.

Held at the Morean at 719 Central Ave. in downtown St. Petersburg, the challenge kicks off at noon. Awards will be announced at 3 p.m., and admission is free to the public.

Divided into professional and novice categories (first and second places will be granted in both), contestants will be judged on icing and frosting; flavor and texture; and presentation and creativity.

Participants must bring 12 cupcakes for the judges to taste, and extra sweets for the masses are recommended. They'll be voting for the People's Choice award, after all. Each vote will cost $1, and the proceeds will benefit the Morean.

The winners will take home the glass cupcake trophy crafted by the Morean's Glass Studio & Hot Shop resident artisans.
