The Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest is on the move. In response to a massive turnout over the years, the annual event will relocate to the Morean Center for Clay to accommodate more guests, bakers and cupcakes.
On Aug. 20, contestants will convene in the former Warehouse Arts District train station, competing for titles in four categories: "Professional," "Novice," People's Choice and "Specialty," a new award for bakers with gluten-free or vegan options. Doors are set to open to the crowd at noon, and judges will announce the winners at 3 p.m.
Around 30 contestants have battled for bragging rights at the popular (and free) competition in the past. This year, due to the larger venue, that number expands to about 60. Interested bakers can submit their registration forms until Aug. 15, and cupcakes will be judged on features like icing, flavor, texture and creativity.
Guests can take part in the judging process by paying $1 per ticket to vote their favorite cupcake into the People's Choice category. The voting proceeds will benefit the Morean Arts Center.
Last year, the Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest drew more than 400 people; organizers expect a similar response this year, estimating a crowd of about 500.
