Hamburger Mary's to open location in St. Pete

The Tyrone area will soon "eat, drink and be Mary" at its own Hamburger Mary's outpost.

Hamburger Mary's is bringing its signature burgers, drinks and sass to St. Petersburg.

Across from Tyrone Square Mall at 2901 Tyrone Blvd., the new bar and grill is scheduled to open in late August or early September. Its 5,900-square-foot building, the former site of a Hooters and the Bia Maria's pizza restaurant (which served its last meal June 19), will seat 250 inside and outside on the patio.

The St. Pete Hamburger Mary's, which has been in the works for the last five years, plans to feature staple themed nights like drag queen bingo and drag shows, as well as fresh events like drag queen trivia. It will also introduce popular Mary's items, such as the Queen Mary burger (Cheddar and Jack cheese, grilled onions, bacon and Mary's special sauce), to the Tyrone neighborhood.

On Tuesday, Kurt King, seven-year owner of the local franchise that operates restaurants in Ybor City and Clearwater, told CL he's always loved St. Pete and wants to introduce more to the area, including "more jobs for the transgender and LGBT community."

King added that he's looking into other locations in the area, the next being Sarasota.
