If your mom prefers virgin cocktails, consider a virgin variation of the popular brunch cocktail, Bloody Mary. One reason Bloody Mary cocktails are often included in brunches is because many people believe they cure hangovers. There isn?t a definite story behind the creation of Bloody Mary, but Queen Mary I has been associated with the cocktails. Since your mom is a queen on Mother?s Day, this Virgin Mary cocktail would be a royal treat. Bonus points if she?s Catholic.

Virgin Mary
3 oz. tomato juice
1/2 oz. lemon juice
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
Celery salt
Ground pepper
Hot pepper or Tabasco sauce
Celery stalk, for garnish

Pour the tomato juice and lemon juice into a highball glass over ice. Mix well.
Add the Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, ground pepper and Tabasco sauce to taste. Garnish with celery stalk.

Ladylike cocktails for Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day on Sunday, a brunch is likely on your agenda. Sure, brunch fare is enjoyable on its own, but what if your mom is craving a marvelous, mom-inspired cocktail? She used to prepare and serve your favorite beverages when you were a tyke, such as hot chocolate or strawberry milk (at least, that’s what my mom prepared for me), so return the favor on Mother’s Day and serve her a homemade cocktail.

The Pink Lady cocktail originated sometime early in the 20th century, and has retained its popularity almost a century later. Its pink hue is achieved by the use of grenadine. Pink Ladies usually include egg whites, but this variation is egg –free (and protein-free). Light cream replaces the egg, resulting in a creamier flavor. Your mom won’t miss the egg, especially since your brunch will likely include eggs in some form. Besides, eggs are tastier on the plate instead of in the glass. If your mom is a fan of Grease, perhaps she’ll sport a Pink Ladies jacket while sipping her Pink Lady cocktail.
