The U.S. Open Beer Championship announced its winners on July 4, and more than 10 Florida craft breweries took home gold, silver and bronze medals for their liquids, including Tampa Bay's Green Bench Brewing Co., Rapp Brewing and Cigar City Brewing.
Judges from England, Canada, Finland and the United States — who sampled brews blindly — also dubbed Green Bench as one of the top 10 breweries.
Eighty-one categories were assigned winners, and more than 20 international breweries from locales like Iceland, Australia, Mexico and Brazil participated.
According to a press release, more than 3,000 beers and ciders were submitted by competitors.
The U.S. Open, which is the only brewery contest that judges professional breweries and award-winning home brewers, named Wormtown Brewing in Worcester, Massachusetts, its Grand National Champion. Wormtown won three golds and one silver.
Three styles of cider were judged for the first time in the competition's history, too. Another Massachusetts brewery, Boston Beer Company, earned three medals, winning the title of Cider of the Year for its Angry Orchard creations.
