The City of Tampa has assembled mixologists from some of the most beloved restaurants around town to compete in creating Tampa's first signature cocktail. Locals are invited to either live stream the event or attend in-person (and follow COVID-19 safety guidelines) to cheer competitors on.

According to the Crafting Tampa's Cocktail event website, a major motivator to find the city's signature cocktail is the upcoming Super Bowl LV.

"[..}all eyes will be on our city--and we want to put our best drink forward. We are calling on the top mixologists to help create a drink that will represent the unique blend of our community," the site says.

The event is going down on Dec. 1 from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. at Winter Village in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. A panel of judges will narrow down the final competitors, who will have their drinks served at Winter Village for the community to select the winner. Talk about pressure.

“After a year full of many let downs and postponed events we wanted to give our residents and visitors alike something to look forward to once we begin events again. Tampa’s a City that knows a thing or two about a party and we need a drink that captures the unique blend of Tampa flavor,” says Mayor Jane Castor in a release.

“This signature event will help highlight our exceptional drink scene in a fun and socially distant competition, which is exactly what we all need in 2020. We hope the community will join us as we raise a glass to our talented mixologists and make Tampa history!”

Mixologists at the following Tampa Bay restaurants will be competing in Crafting Tampa's Cocktail competition:

  • 7th + Grove
  • Anchor & Brine
  • Armature Works (Bar AW)
  • The Big Easy Bar
  • District Tavern
  • First Chance Last Chance
  • Forbici
  • The Hub
  • Jackson's Bistro
  • Remedy/Malio's Prime Steakhouse
  • Sail Plaza
  • White Lie

The socially-distant event will be live-streamed on the City of Tampa and Tampa’s Downtown Facebook pages. During the Facebook live, mixologists will also have an opportunity to promote their virtual tip jars. Virtual tip jars were created in response to support local hospitality workers who have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Make sure to be drinking while watching the competition to make you feel like you have front row seats, and maybe even throw a few bucks.

If you do decide to attend in person, masks are required and be sure to social distance from the rest of the onlookers.
