Orlando-based Michelin-starred restaurateurs Johnny and Jimmy Tung recently announced plans to open a new rooftop experience in Tampa, and they apparently have even more plans for Tampa Bay.
Yesterday, reps for the Tung brothers told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay about Mei, a concept debuting in the former Bento space at 320 3rd St. S this spring, and helmed by Executive Chef Alex Chamberlain, who will be moving from his current position as Chef de Cuisine at the Michelin-starred Kōsen in Tampa. Michelin-awarded Sommelier of the Year, Benjamin Coutts, will run the beverage program.
Named after Chamberlain’s sister, Mei “brings together French technique, Nordic ethos, and Japanese ingredients,” says the press release, which added:
“At Mei, that approach is reflected through in-house fermentation, koji aging, dry aging, and fire-based cooking, blending Nordic open-hearth techniques with Japanese binchotan grilling. The restaurant will operate with a commitment to sustainability, including whole ingredient utilization, preservation to reduce waste, partnerships with local farms and fishermen, composting, and biodegradable packaging—grounded in the belief that thoughtful cooking begins with responsible sourcing and mindful use.”
The new 2,700 square-foot space will feature two distinct concepts: a 50-seat dining area with both an à la carte and pre-fixed menu options called The Living Room, as well as the Kitchen Counter, which only seats 8 and centers around a chef-guided tasting menu.
No exact opening date has been announced, but a waitlist is currently live at mei-restaurant.com. As of now, Mei plans to serve guests Wednesday-Sunday, with the Kitchen Counter experience available on select evenings.
Last week, the Tungs released plans to open a new rooftop lounge in Ybor City called Tokyo Swim Club above the Mise en Place location. Tokyo Swim Club is currently aiming for a fall 2026 debut.
This is not St. Pete’s first fling with a Nordic-Asian inspired concept. “Top Chef” celebrity chef Jeffrey Jew operated the upscale Lingr at 400 6th St. S from 2021 to 2024.
