A new barbecue spot — Holy Hog Barbecue (3501 N Armenia Ave., Tampa, 813-879-4647 or holyhogbbq.com) — has opened in Tampa, in the home of a former Pipo's and owned by some of the people behind Pipo's. Besides the usual array of smoked meat, Holy Hog does some interesting Friday specials that alternate between shrimp and grits, fried chicken and waffles, a fish fry and a whole pig roast.
Longtime veteran of Roy's restaurants Tony Bellanca has opened Bric (223 S Howard Ave., Tampa), in the former Strings N Rings Cafe spot in SoHo that's been empty for years now. It is reportedly a fusion of Italian, Spanish and Southern cuisine, with Cuban influences. Bellanca hopes to add full liquor to the restaurant in the future, as well as late-night hours.
