I only learned of Palomas a few months back, and full disclosure, I may have went through a bottle of tequila in a week drinking them. How had I never seen one on a menu somewhere?
A traditional Paloma is simply tequila and grapefruit soda. Jarritos makes an excellent version that I recommend using. But since we have a chance to add freshly squeezed Florida citrus, let’s do it.
After enjoying a couple (read: several) classics, I decided to spice up my Palomas with a twist. This is where the jalapeño comes in. Two semi-thin slices, seeds and ribs included, are just enough to give the drink a little kick.
Spicy Paloma
Makes 1
2 ounces tequila
1/2 grapefruit, squeezed
2 jalapeño slices
Lime soda
Fill a cocktail shaker full of ice. Add tequila, grapefruit juice and jalapeño, and then shake well for 10 seconds. Strain the cocktail into a glass with ice and top with lime soda. Use a grapefruit or lime wedge for garnish if desired.
