Pairing wine with Firehouse subs, can it be done?

The Esporão is a blend of Portuguese and international grape varietals with fruity yet herbal characteristics that let you enjoy all the meaty flavors in the sandwich. When you’re done with dinner, you can continue to enjoy this wine by the glass.

Get into a New York state-of-mind with the New York Steamer sub made from corned beef brisket, pastrami, melted provolone, mustard, mayo, and Italian dressing. It’s a bit of an ethnic mixture but isn’t that what New York is all about?

A glass of Bodegues Sumarroca Temps de Flors Penedes with the New York Steamer brings the sub to its full potential. There’s a hint of fruity, sweetness in this wine that you’ll enjoy with the salty, smoky flavor of the pastrami.

Made with Genoa salami, pepperoni, ham, melted provolone, Italian dressing, and seasonings, the Italian Sub is a “hot” seller second only to the Hook & Ladder. It’s a real melt-in-your-mouth sandwich — the kind Tony Soprano would expect to find on his plate. And he’d want it with a glass of Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva.

The Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva is a real Tuscan gem. I wouldn’t pair it with just anything. Tobacco, sweet herbs, licorice and dark red berry flavors make this an extremely pleasing to drink wine. It is made with mostly Sangiovese with a smidge of Cabernet Sauvignon for good measure.

The King’s Hawaiian Pork & Slaw sandwich is a limited time offering that will make you wish you could keep the calendar at a standstill. They take King’s Hawaiian bread — it’s that soft bread that has the delicious, kind of sweet taste to it — and pile it high with steaming hot 12-hour smoked pulled pork, pepper jack cheese and Hawaiian cole slaw. Mouthwatering! Those sweet and spicy flavors are like Mauna Loa coming to life with each bite.

Have the King’s Hawaiian Pork & Slaw sub with Standing Sun Wines 2011 Santa Barbara County LE Blanc. Like the sandwhich, this wine is a blend: Grenache Blanc, Rousanne and Viognier. The wine pulls it off with the all the different food flavors coming at you; stone fruit (think peach, apricot) flavors go up against the creaminess in the slaw and the crisp finish cuts into the smoky essence of the pulled pork. LE Blanc and King's Hawaiian sub make for Aloha Oluolu.

You have to have a little nosh to clean out the palate. The thing to have is the Firehouse Sub Lemon Cooler cookie; baked right on premise. It’s a lemon cookie made with white chocolate —yummy! You don’t need a glass of milk just a glass of the Redtree California Moscato. Lemony meets citrusy and they love happily ever after.

Rushing around to get dinner done? Just stop by Firehouse Subs and grab one of their overloaded, meaty sandwiches and pair it up with a glass of wine. It’s a sure-fire way to turn fast food into a sit-down meal.

The number one seller at Firehouse Subs is the Hook & Ladder. It is smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham and melted Monterey Jack cheese along with the full complement of fixings including a snappy dill spear on the side. This monster sub can be shared while enjoying sips of Esporão Reserva DOC Red Alentejo wine.
