The Deuces Live Sunday Market, a new outdoor farmers market in the Midtown area of St. Petersburg, premiered on Sunday at 22nd Street South and Ninth Avenue.
As visitors approached from down the street, “Rock the Boat” by the Hues Corporation and other R&B classics could be heard. Market spectators lounged in folding chairs in the shade as children danced together in groups, keeping pace with the tunes being broadcast from a large stage.
The market, hosted in a lot next to the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, was organized by the Deuces Live, a Florida Main Street community that seeks to revitalize Midtown’s historic 22nd Street South. The group launched the open-air market with hopes of bringing shopping and economic opportunities back to the neighborhood.
Among more than 20 vendors, live entertainment and family-friendly activities, including an art booth for the market’s younger visitors, a medley of fare was showcased.
Baskets of affordable fresh produce (mostly in the $2 range), such as potatoes, lettuce and mangoes, were abundant throughout the afternoon, while visitors noshed on baked goods from Sweet Sisters, Latin Lunch Box food truck offerings, Rich N Rise Thai Food and more.
Booths also sold hand-crafted jewelry, beauty supplies, clothes and additional wardrobe accessories, joining the ranks of other weekend markets around Tampa Bay.
The Deuces Live Sunday Market is held 1 to 6 p.m. every Sunday.
