Nearly a decade ago, Megan and Austin Garcia-Cooper moved into a storefront in a much smaller downtown St. Pete to blend local fashion, drinks, live music, and community events all under one roof.
Now, Brutique closes its doors at 648 Central Avenue next month.
“This decision breaks my heart, but as much as St. Pete has changed over the last decade, so has my life, and I know I’m making the right choice for my family,” Megan wrote in her closing announcement on social media.
When the shop first opened in 2017 as Bartique (it rebranded two years later), St. Pete was in the midst of its transformation from a retirement city reputation into one of Florida’s fastest-growing cities.
“St. Pete was a hub for small independent businesses. The 600 block was known for local artists and music venues and it was exciting to be a part of that culture,” Garcia-Cooper recalled.
Brutique’s trendy clothes drew in tourists and casual shoppers, while its laid-back bar kept a regular crowd. The spot was also known for hosting charity events and progressive fundraisers.
“We became a ‘Cheers’-type atmosphere for friends and strangers, which created something really special,” she told CL.
“We’ve done so many fun, and important events, and have raised a lot of money for really great charities. We’ve always stayed true to who we are and the values that are important to us, like supporting the LGBTQ+ community and helping foster dogs in need of homes. I’ll always cherish the events, friends and memories we’ve made over the last 9.5 years.”
Garcia-Cooper said she doesn’t know if a new tenant has been found, “but I’m sure it won’t be hard to fill our spot.”
