Is Hunahpu's Day on one of those "you know you're in Tampa when…" lists yet? Because it should be.

You know you're in Tampa when Cigar City Brewing's biggest annual event has left you feeling the effects of its impressive beer list, despite your substantial intake of Kaixo Gourmet fried potato wedges. (Carbs… and hydration… are important.)

Along the Tampa Riverwalk on Saturday, the eighth annual craft beer festival and Hunahpu's Imperial Stout bottle release drew more than 300 unlimited offerings from more than 120 breweries to a crowded Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park and, yeah, spread out across four tents, that's a lot of beer.

Luckily, with the purchase of admission, ticket holders received four meal tickets good for the variety of food trucks on-site, plus their promised bottles of Huna, which were distributed at the nearby Marriott Waterside Hotel. Locals and out-of-towners still geek out over the celebrated beer, and brave the lines for its different versions during the festival. This year, the second year the event was hosted away from Cigar City's headquarters, showcased a Cognac Oak Strawberry Hunahpu's as well as a Rum Barrel-Aged Hunahpu's.

Breweries like 3 Sons, Toppling Goliath and Cascade also had long waits (Toppling Goliath's was already winding through the park from tent B when I got there a little after 11 a.m.), and others, such as J. Wakefield, were sold out by 1:30 p.m. or so. My favorites included the Põhjala Mel Gibson Scottish Ale (Estonia); Arkane Aleworks Gimme Swelter Mango Habanero Florida Weisse (Largo); B. Nektar Oh My God, They Killed Zombie! Apple Mead with cherry and spices on nitro (Michigan) that I'm told I might never see again; and Omnipollo Magnus Opus Imperial Stout (Sweden), half of which was put through a soft-serve ice cream machine, then added to the top of my regular Magnus Opus.

I had a hard time getting the Hunahpu's Day app (where the list of participating breweries, beer and more could be found) to load during the event, so I just perused from tent to tent with an idea of what I wanted to score. But even if you have the opportunity to try some breweries locally more regularly than others, don't skip 'em — they might be serving up stuff you've never tried. Following the crowds is a good strategy, too, if you're not sure what to go for next, though this first-timer wouldn't recommend doing so the entire day; you could find your next best-loved beer at a lesser-known booth, and that discovery, at what continues to be one of Tampa's signature events, is kind of the whole point, right?

Now, if anyone needs me, I'll be soothing my hangover with more beer on the last day of Tampa Bay Beer Week, perhaps with booth B20, 7venth Sun Brewery, during its post-Huna party, Hangover Day. Happy drinking!
