Roughly two years ago, Aldi purchased hundreds of Florida Winn-Dixie locations, and has since been in the process of converting them into the popular German discount grocer. Now, it appears a Temple Terrace location in Winn Dixie is next to get the Aldi makeover
According to a listing on the commercial real estate website Loopnet, an “ALDI Excess Space” is now available for lease where the current Winn Dixie is located at 8837 N 56th St., along with an Aldi logo.
The Temple Terrace Winn Dixie has a 41,000 square-foot footprint, which is almost double the size of a typical Aldi, which may explain why the listing is offering up 18,958-square-feet of the space.
The plaza currently is home to a Burger King, a Jersey Mike’s, a Crumbl Cookie, a post office and more. The new Temple Terrace Aldi would also place the German grocer less than a quarter mile from the area’s closest Publix on Busch Boulevard.
Aldi has already completed a similar buildout in the newly-opened Armenia Avenue location, where it only used half of the former Winn-Dixie retail space, and is currently in the process of doing the same thing with the location just down the road at 9535 E Fowler Ave, in Thonotosassa.
As of now, Aldi has yet to file any building permits for the Temple Terrace spot, and has not responded to requests for comment from Creative Loafing Tampa Bay.
But not all Tampa Bay Winn Dixies will end up getting the Aldi facelift. Since the acquisition from Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers in 2024, Aldi has sold back nearly 200 Winn Dixie locations to a new investor group called Winn-Dixie Co.
As for the remaining Winn Dixie locations now owned by Aldi, the German grocer has already converted a handful of the Tampa Bay stores, including the South Tampa location on Swanm Avenue, and plans to convert all remaining 220 locations by 2027.
