The great St. Pete cupcake contest

There are few things on this planet more cheerful than a cupcake. Something happens when you're handed that single-sized sweet treat, carefully decorated and ready for a big bite. Even if you don't like cupcakes, I assume you'll at least agree they are pretty damn cute.

If you're a cupcake fiend, or a friend of a cupcake fiend, the Morean Arts Center's Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest is for you. During its first year, the competition garnered more than 90 entries and the public reaped the rewards. The competition is back for its third year, and expects 50-60 contestants to bring their cupcake creations on Saturday, Aug.17, at 12 p.m.

Anyone can enter, all you need to do is fill out this form (and pay the $15 entry fee), and make at least 12 cupcakes for the judges to taste (bring more for the masses!). Cupcakes are judged by a panel of experts (including yours truly) based on icing/frosting, flavor and texture, and presentation/creativity. The event is FREE for the public to attend and taste. Attendees are asked to vote for the people's choice award at $1 per vote (that money goes to the art center's Connecting People With Art mission).

Last year's People's Choice Award Winner was Lori Schmidt of St. Petersburg's Key Lime Paradise Cupcakes. This year's winner will take home a handmade cupcake glass trophy from resident artisans at the Glass Studio & Hot Shop. FREE, 12-3 p.m., 719 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, 727-822-7872.
