Top Chef Podcast - All-Stars Ep. 4: The invisible chef

The big deal for this episode was that, once again, Jamie got away with not preparing a dish. Technically, because her team was behind in points in this head-to-head dish challenge, someone would have ended up not being able to serve their dish. Jamie made herself look bad by refusing to plate her dish and hid behind a table for the remainder of the challenge, thus the finger of blame was pointed toward her. Because if she never got to serve her dish then the judges never got to taste how bad it was, thus sparing her from the chopping block. You simply must watch Eric Ripert rip her a new one on his video blog on the Top Chef site.

In the end, Hootie Hoo (Carla) took the win for her African peanut soup and got herself a trip to Italy. I won't reveal the loser, but I will say this: I don't think it was their time to go, but I also think your dish is your responsibility -- don't try to lay blame on someone else if it sucks. And don't let Angelo touch your sh*t!

Did anyone else feel dirty after watching last night's episode of Top Chef All-Stars, or was it just me? From defiling kitchen hardware during the Quickfire, to the closeup shots of Carla's bloody finger, to Angelo putting his hands in everyone's stuff (literally), it was a very grimy episode.

I have to give it to the producers this season (again) because there continue to be exciting challenges worthy of the All-Stars. We're also getting to see who really wants to be there, who wasn't ready for this kind of competition and who may have just shown up for the paycheck.

The Quickfire stuffing challenge where the chefs weren't allowed to use their usual kitchen tools (knives, spoons, etc.) was like Top Chef: MacGyver — each chef using the craziest items to prep their dishes. And Tre totally deserved to win with that amazing-looking Southwestern stuffing. (I'm all over copying that recipe this weekend.)

As for the Elimination Challenge, they were once again on teams and competing at the US Open (the famous tennis venue), creating healthy dishes for tennis players. I'm not quite sure who the pro tennis player guest judge was, but I do know that they could've picked someone a bit more articulate to judge — someone who gave us more than, "That tasted good."
