At 11 a.m. Saturday, vegan author Ellen Jaffe Jones is set to visit Nature's Food Patch in Clearwater to showcase her first free cooking class, Vegan Lunches for Kids.
Known as The Veg Coach, Jones wrote the wallet-friendly book, Eat Vegan on $4 a Day, as well as other works like Kitchen Divided: Vegan Dishes for Semi-Vegan Households. Inside the Patch Works community room, Jones will show parents how to craft two quick and filling vegan lunch recipes: calabacitas and burritos.
Jones, who's also a motivational speaker and certified personal trainer, is no stranger to instructing vegan cooking lessons; she's led them for years in the St. Petersburg area, Bradenton and Anna Maria Island.
Later, at 7 p.m. Jan. 25, food journalist Barry Estabrook will discuss his new book, Pig Tales: An Ominvore's Guide to Sustainable Meat, at USF St. Petersburg's University Student Center.
While the 3-year-old Tomatoland novel from Estabrook — who's written for the New York Times and Washington Post — delved into the questionable agriculture practices of the tomato business, his latest work investigates the pork industry. A Q&A session will be featured after the presentation.
The program, part of the university's Food for Thought Lecture Series, is free, but guests are encouraged to RSVP in advance to secure their spots. Those who don't will be seated when space becomes available.
