Seen & Heard: On the sidewalk leading from the parking garage to BayWalk, St. Pete.
Jerry's no-frills electric keyboard is powered by a 320-volt battery with a handle (that can also convert into a flashlight). It allows him to play for three hours nonstop. Hunched over the keys, he played with two fingers of each hand. Backed by the rig's built-in beatbox, he played a long, winding organ solo that had a vaguely gospel flavor. A New Orleans native who's lived in Florida "for a long time," Jerry says he's played the streets for about two years.
Eric: Your playing's rudimentary, Jerry, but it has a certain innocent charm. Try making some eye contact with your audience — I'll bet your tips would go up.
Leilani: Jerry, you seemed very, um, focused on what you were doing. The backup music to your keyboard solos could use some work, though. Maybe less electronic drum? I couldn't help but smile when you smiled — it was contagious.
Wade: A master of minimalism — preprogrammed melodies spiced with distinct two-finger stylings. I'm with Eric on the eye contact, though — cut down on the navel-gazing and you'll increase your take.
