On Saturday night, concertgoers and Tampa’s MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre played host to a duo of legendary alt-rock bands in Weezer and the Pixies. As the sweat dripped down the backs of many living in their own personal swamp for the night, Weezer made a scorching night in the Bay area even hotter.

Right out of the gate, Weezer, a beloved band that burst onto the scene 20-plus years ago with its megahit blue album, rekindled all of the nostalgia and endearing charm from 1994.

Emerging from behind a large black curtain and playing “Buddy Holly” in front of a stage background reminiscent of the original music video, Weezer immediately got fans onto their feet and belting out all of the words. Smiles on faces would last the entire evening. A cascade of hits followed — “Beverly Hills,” “Hash Pipe,” and “Undone — The Sweater Song,” and I believe I saw 10-year-old me jumping around like a schoolgirl when “My Name is Jonas” started.

Throughout the night the backdrops changed from aforementioned Buddy Holly set, to an old garage with concert posters on the wall (perfect set-up for “In The Garage”). An acoustic stage right smack dab in the middle of the crowd morphed into a more modern set fully equipped lights, fog machines and pyrotechnics making for a playful production that was never over-the-top and fully fueled by the kick-ass band in front of fan’s sweaty faces.

For a band that has been around for more than two decades, the energy and charm in its set made Weezer look and sound like a band in its prime. Frontman Rivers Cuomo’s voice was pitch-perfect (hell, dude can hit some serious falsettos, too) and the band was flawless to match. The set saw old favorites, new ones and even some covers (The Turtles and Green Day medley “Happy Together”/”Longview,” Oasis’ “Wonderwall” and a recent hit, Toto’s “Africa”). Cuomo even went from 70s garb to a Weezer soccer jersey. At one point he rode his Razor scooter off of the stage only to emerge in the middle of the crowd in a Hawaiian shirt and captain’s hat before winding up underneath two oversized umbrellas, acoustic guitar in hand, to play sing alongs “Island in the Sun” and Oasis’s “Wonderwall.”

The band genuinely looked like they were having a blast and all of that resonated in the atmosphere at the Old Gary. Weezer finished the night saying “This is our last jam, have a great night” before playing “Say It Ain’t So” taking a bow, and walking off stage. It was a perfect ending to a perfect night.

Opening up for Weezer was a band that could very well be a headliners itself. The Pixies’ history in music runs deep and if you had the chance to see the group roll through an hour-long set on Saturday night left no question why. With Black Francis leading the way, the Pixies charged through a set of classics — “Bone Machine,” “Monkey Gone to Heaven,” “Where Is My Mind” and “Hey” — and showed off why it has influenced so many bands in the years since the release of Surfer Rosa 30 years ago.

While the band collectively sounded great and very well rehearsed, perhaps the shining star of the night was the guitarist.
