JJ Grey’s sets of distinctly Floridian swamp rock and blues always manage to punch audiences in the gut, but songs like “The Sun Is Shining Down” might hit even harder this weekend. The Jacksonville-area native lost his father recently, and the influence of Grey’s family has always bled into so much of Mofro’s celebrated, nearly 20-year-old discography.
Sunshine State pedal steel god Roosevelt Collier opens this just-out-of-the-area show that more that a few handfuls of Bay area fans will surely drive to.
JJ Grey & Mofro w/Roosevelt Collier. Sat. Sept. 7, 7 p.m. $35 & up. Jessie's Lounge, Winter Haven. Centralfloridatix.com.
