Even though the local Latin jazz quintet has been serving up their blend of intoxicating grooves for something like two decades, Guisando Caliente ("cooking hot") is just now getting around to releasing their first-ever studio LP. Recorded at the Palladium in St. Petersburg, Coolantro is a tasty Dizzie Gillespie-inspired debut that includes original pieces along with re-workings of classics like "A Night in Tunisia." The intoxicating salsa and Afro-Cuban arrangements are marked by band leader Frankie Piñeiro's percussive drive on congas, and rounded out by Kenny Drew Jr.'s classy keys, jazzy tenor sax by Jeff Rupert, airy backbeats by drummer John Jenkins, and the tight upright bass work of Mauricio Rodriguez.
