Rocktober started off with a bit of twang with tunes from Greenland is Melting, Rebekah Pulley and Jon Gaunt at New World Brewery on October 1, 2009.
Greenland is Melting with Jon Gaunt
Greenland is Melting
Greenland is Melting plays simply splendid soulful roots rock that is equally at home sitting on the porch or around the kitchen table. With lines like "my grass is blue" Greenland is Melting make it clear that they are channeling old timey bluegrass; but with a chorus of "I know, I know, if there's blood on the banjo tonight then I really must have done something right" you know they also bring a bit of ruckus.
Greenland is Melting is from Gainesville so chances are you will have the opportunity to check them out again soon. Get ready to sing along by heading to www.greenlandismelting.com where you can download their new album, Our Hearts Are Gold Our Grass Is Blue, for free by typing in $0.00 for purchase price, or pick a more generous amount if you are so inclined. I'd be surprised if "Blood on the Banjo" and "The Kitchen Song" don't end up on your most played songs list!
Greenland is Melting is Karl Seltzer, Will Dueease and Shaun Pereira
Rebekah Pulley
As the 2009 Creative Loafing Best Local Singer/Songwriter, Rebekah Pulley needs no introduction to Tampa Bay music fans. With her delightful, sultry voice and solid alt-country tunes, you can't go wrong. Her current record is "Back to Boogaloo" and if you haven't picked it up yet, now is the time! Her set this evening was a nice mix of new and old songs with back up from Rob Pastore (Upright Bass) and Max Norton (Drums).
Jon Gaunt
Jon Gaunt, aka The Fiddle King, has played on americana records in your collection. He was in Whiskey & Co and played on the Revival Tour in 2008 and is on again for the 2009 edition this fall (in St. Pete on Nov. 21 at The State Theatre). It was delightful to see him play solo to fully showcase the extent of his fiddling skills. Happily, I am hearing rumors of more solo shows in the future!
Mark you calendars for these upcoming Americana shows:
Oct. 26 Modern Skirts, The Old Ceremony, Glasgow and Alexander & The Grapes at Orpheum
Oct. 29 – David Dondero, Whiskey & Co and Christina Wagner at New World Brewery
Oct. 30 Nov. 1 Lots of Americana bands at Gainesville Fest
Nov. 6 – Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves, Mike Hale & Special Guests TBA at Crowbar
Nov. 13 Lucero at Czar
Nov. 21 Revival Tour at State Theatre
