✔️ Rabbit in the Moon In the ‘90s, Tampa’s own electronic duo Rabbit in the Moon created sounds that pulled from psych-trance, house and breakbeat music. For EDM buffs, Rabbit in the Moon is synonymous with groundbreaking rave soundtracks. Its 1999 release Floori.D.A. remains legendary in the Florida EDM scene. David Christophere and singer-performer Bunny recently brought a new live set to Miami’s Ultra festival, and the group is bringing the theatrics to its hometown for a show in front of an always-ready-to-party Saturday crowd. MUSIC ISSUE 2017
Legendary moments — remembering when in Tampa Bay music

Fat Jim Morrison w/John Nowicki He’s back. Fat Jim Morrison “headlines” this show at new Tampa Heights sporting complex Shuffle. The abrasive, outspoken and rotund songwriter only seems to show up when Tampa native John Nowicki is also on the bill, which is a little peculiar, but all of his appearances have been arrest-free and a pretty good time. (Shuffle, Tampa) INFO

UT Jazz Combo w/Interactive Arts Ensemble/World Drumming Ensemble Thomas Jemmott drives the bus as the Jazz Combo ensemble performs a mix of genre standards, funk classics and contemporary pop songs. The University of Tampa’s Interactive Arts Ensemble — under the direction of Victor Ezquerra — uses technology in creative ways to compose, improvise and perform experimental, interdisciplinary works, and UT’s World Drumming Ensemble wraps it all up with a performance built around West African sounds. (Falk Theatre at University of Tampa, Tampa) INFO

✔️ David Foster Have you ever belted out “The Prayer” or “You’re The Inspiration” all by yourself in the shower? Well get ready to do it again, all by your lonesome, if you don’t have a ticket to see 16-time Grammy-winning songwriter David Foster make his Capitol Theatre debut. This one sold out a while ago, so bring your glory of love elsewhere (or to StubHub). (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater) INFO

The Ries Brothers w/Ted Bowne Ted Bowne played a big part in the production of the first full-length from St. Petersburg duo The Ries Brothers, so it’ll be interesting to see what transpires when the Passafire frontman joins Kevin and Charlie Ries for a gig at this Ybor City listening room. The brothers are a captivating live act that just came off of the road with G. Love and Special Sauce, and Passarfire has been doing it since 2006, so there’s going to be a lot of experience onstage for this one. (The Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing, Ybor City) INFO

FOR GOOD RIESON
G. Love waxes on Ries Brothers, the Eagles' Super Bowl win and more for Cigar City Radio — listen

Infinite Third w/Gullwing/Grandeur and the Delusions Getting back home safely from tour is nothing to blink at, so it’s cool to see Billy Mays III’s ambient project marking the occasion with a gig at Fringe District record shop Planet Retro. It’s a $5 donation for three bands. (Planet Retro Records, St. Petersburg) INFO

Chris McCarty You usually have to meander into the Seminole Hard Rock Casino to catch a little Chris McCarty, so it’s nice to see the charismatic Gainesville songwriter in Seminole Heights for a change. Bonus points since the gig is a fundraiser that finds a Bay area realtor, Alfio Carroccetto, helping raise money to buy an infant vein finder for the St. Joseph’s Hospital Pediatric ER. (Red Star Rock Bar, Tampa) INFO

✔️ Los Reyesz Bong Death w/SPIT/Tyrants of Hell Every now and then you can catch a rockabilly band at The Hub and swing dance the night away. This isn’t one of those nights. Los Reyesz Bong Death — a Miami outfit that describes its sounds as “shitpostingdeathweedgrind” — headlines with some mincecore (think ‘80s grindcore, really simple, aggressive stuff), and the rest of the Tampa-based bill is rounded out by death/grind band Tyrants of Hell, powerviolence trio SPIT and Apoc Siren, which makes scary industrial music. We’re actually looking forward to this, but we’re definitely bringing ear plugs. (The Hub Bar, Tampa) INFO

The Supervillains Is there a better band name to put on top of the bill for a pregame concert before game one of the Tampa Bay Lightning's Stanley Cup Playoff match up against the Boston Bruins? You don't need a game ticket to attend this free concert on the Ford Thunder Alley stage outside of Amalie Arena where Orlando ska outfit The Supervillains will play from 1:15 pm – 2:45 pm. (Ford Thunder Alley at Amalie Arena, Tampa) INFO

✔️ Bay to Beach Festival w/Hunter Hayes/Andy Grammer/LoCash/Parachute/Jerrod Niemann/Stephanie Quayle/Aubrey Wollett/Nate Currin After more than 60 years, Clearwater’s Fun ‘N Sun Festival has finally ended. In its place? Bay 2 Beach, a two-day shindig that leans heavily on country — “Honey I’m Good” singer Hunter Hayes, LoCash, Jerrod Niemann — and pop music, too (Andy Grammer, Parachute). All of it is pretty affordable, and Coachman Park is hands-down one of the best Bay area outdoor venues to just sit back and kick it at. More info is available via myclearwaterevents.com.
