A quick look at some shows happening this Sat., Sept. 12…
Tremonti, Trivium with Wilson “HardDrive Live Tour” If you saw the word “Tremonti” and went “holy crap, I bet that’s a band by former Creed and Alter Bridge guitarist Mark Tremonti!”, then wow, man, you must love yourself some post-grunge. You’d also be correct; Tremonti is singing lead this time around, as well, and delivering sounds solidly in his hard-rock wheelhouse. The true highlight of this bill has gotta be Orlando outfit Trivium, which just a few years back was putting out some of the best thrash this side of Metallica’s first three albums. 5 Seconds of Summer with Hey Violet If you’re over the age of, say, 30, you realize calling Aussie quartet 5 Seconds of Summer a pop-punk act is something of a blasphemy — bolstering its snotty vocals and simple, tried-and-true hooks with electro beats and dings, the group is pop-punk in about the same ways that a can of Chef Boyardee ravioli is Italian food: just barely, and not really. Catchy and girl-crazy and kid-friendly, though. Hailing from LA, Hey Violet is similarly slick, guitar-driven and inescapably memory-adhesive. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheater, Tampa) —SH
Lillette Jenkins-Wisner feat. Jade Campbell If they had had cellphones in the 1940s, Liliette Jenkins-Wisner would’ve had Cab Calloway, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, B.B. King, and Duke Ellington on speed dial, and while the “Queen Of The Keys” is well into her 90s, she is still probably going to breeze through this very, very special performance at Ruth Eckerd Hall’s newly reinvigorated Murray Studio Theatre. Expect some great stories and be ready to be amazed at how she can still command her instrument. Pianist Jade Simmons, who will play Jenkins-Wisner in an upcoming biopic/stage play, also performs. Localpalooza with UNRB, Infinite Skillz, Lions After Dark, DJ Blizz An ideal show for music lovers craving sounds outside rigidly defined genres. UNRB has nabbed three Best of the Bay awards from CL, including the Readers’ Pick for “Best Local Ska/Reggae Band” in 2013 and 2014. Lions After Dark has a heavy, atmospheric sound with a killer female vocal. (Ferg’s Live, Tampa) —Julie Garisto
Afroman The rapper born Joseph Edgar Foreman, and famous for the sing-along party favorite “Because I Got High,” was recently given a suspended six-month jail sentence, fined $330 and ordered to undergo anger management and impulse behavior counseling for punching a woman who jumped onstage during a concert earlier this year. Why, you may ask? “Because he got high, because he got high, because he got high…” (State Theatre, St. Petersburg) —JG
