A breakdown of shows occurring this Thurs., Jan. 15.
David Bromberg Quintet A folk-blues multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter who played and collaborated with a broad range of artists – Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jerry Garcia and Emmylou Harris among them – and was a rather active solo performer in his own right through the 1970s until he pretty much quit the music biz in 1980 to learn violin making and repair. David Bromberg spent more than two decades away, putting out the odd recording but not touring until he made an official comeback with 2007’s Grammy-nominated Try Me One More Time. He’s on the road again behind another full-length, 2013’s Only Slightly Mad, which hearkens back to his genre-jumping ‘70s-era sound, mixing blues, bluegrass, folk, gospel, pop, Irish fiddle tunes and English drinking songs. He’ll be joined by a four-piece that includes players on mandolin, fiddle, bass and drums. (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater)
Nicki Parrott, Rossano Sportiello & Eddie Metz A Side Door Jazz presentation featuring double bassist and jazz vocalist Nicki Parrott – sidewoman of the late Les Paul for more than a decade and a member of the band that regularly plays in his memory at NYC’s Iridium Jazz Club – as joined by pianist Rossano Sportiello and drummer Eddie Metz, Jr. The trio released It’s a Good Day in 2013 and will likely play cuts from the album along with other surprises. (Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg)
Kayo Dot Toby Driver is the founder of Brooklyn-bred Kayo Dot and its sole remaining original member. He’s led the band’s aesthetic changes over a dozen years, from straightforward metal to the more avant post-rock and Dark Wave experimentalism of 2014’s Coffins on Io, described as “the bats-in-your-belfry hard rock of Sisters of Mercy meets Peter Gabriel-era Genesis, Scritti Politti and early Roxy Music.” Dark, moody, expansive and at times ethereal, Io is littered with abstract sax notes, doomful basslines, echoing guitar solos, ambient synthesizers that rise to fuzzy ominous tones and goth-dramatic vocals. (Orpheum, Ybor City)
