International Jazz Composers Symposium w/John Hollenbeck/Billy Childs/Chuck Owen If only for three days, Tampa will be the center of the jazz world as it plays host to the International Jazz Composers Symposium (IJCS.) The event — which hasn't been held since ‘08 — will feature a conference style format with workshops, concerts and meet-and-greet opportunities for fans and jazz scholars alike. The event also serves as a showcase for USF’s new School of Music building and concert hall where jazz fans can opt for nightly entry or the full weekend experience. Headlining this edition of IJCS are pianist Billy Childs, drummer John Hollenbeck, Grammy-winning composer Maria Schneider, bassist Rufus Reid and USF’s own Chuck Owen. Visit isjac.org for more info. Lewis Del Mar w/Anna Wise Danny Miller and Max Harwood, the New York-based duo who make up Lewis Del Mar, had quite the year. Since its self-titled debut EP made a strong run on the Billboard charts in 2016, Lewis Del mar has been a mainstay on the 2017 festival circuit (Okeechobee, Hangout and Firefly to name a few). The boys are darlings of alternative music scene thanks to Miller’s laid back vocals and Harwood’s electric drum heavy production, which anchor songs like “14 Faces,” “Malt Liquour” and “Islands.” Adding more intrigue is opener Anna Wise. While not yet widely-known for her solo work, Wise has contributed to all four of Kendrick Lamar’s studio albums, even picking up a Grammy for her work on the song “These Walls.” She’ll be touring in support of her recently released album The Feminine: Act II.
