Lots happening on this Fri., Oct. 2. Check out the breakdown below, and peep some shows coming up this weekend.
Red Baraat with The Main Squeeze With a propulsive, buoyant sound rooted in Punjabi rhythms, the dhol drumming of northern India, and Indian brass band traditions, but launching into modern sonic realms, Brooklyn-brewed Red Baraat has been making itself known around the world as piloted by founder/bandleader/first gen Indian-American musician, Sunny Jain. NPR famously dubbed Red Baraat “The best party band in years,” and third and latest outing Gaadi of Truth, finds the ensemble of horns and percussion broadening their stylistic palette and embracing digital trappings alongside the acoustic instrumentation; Jain’s dhol is run through pedals while his sousaphone player processes sounds with various synth effects to achieve a deeper lowend blast. The Main Squeeze, from Ohio, warms the stage with a mix of rock, funk, blues and soul. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)
Voodoo Glow Skulls with The Phenomenauts, Piñata Protest, Wolf-Face Formed by the Casillas brothers in California more than 25 years ago, Voodoo Glow Skulls are among the elder statesmen of ska-punk and have maintained a devoted fanbase with their harder, faster and more sinister take on the aesthetic with double horn blasts (sax and trumpet) and aggro-kicking instrumentals. This date finds them joined by fellow Cali outfit The Phenomenauts, crafting a mix of punk, surf and psychobilly, and accordion-powered Tex-Mex-meets-punk quartet Piñata Protest. (Crowbar, Ybor City)
Helping Hands for Hudson This charity concert is held in support of a family whose young son is losing his battle with Stage IV Neuroblastoma, with an evening of performances by Chris Cava, Jeff Brockman, Kathy McGuire, Jordan Esker & the Hundred Percent, Terry T. Trio, and the John Kelly Band. Tickets are a suggested $10-$50 donation. Find out more about Hudson’s story and where you can make a contribution online at facebook.com/HelpingHandsForHudson. (Hideaway Café & Recording Studio, St. Petersburg)
Abigail Williams with Today Is The Day Named for the lead accuser in the Salem Witch trials and spewing death sentences one blackened musical passage at a time, Abigail Williams is a Washington-based outfit with an ever-changing lineup based around sole original vocalist/guitarist Ken "Sorceron" Bergeron, and three full-lengths to its credit released through Candlelight Records; forthcoming fourth, The Accuser, is due out October 30. (Epic Problem, Tampa)
Adventure Club with Paris Blohm Christian Srigley and Leighton James are the Canadian DJ/producers behind Adventure Club, their sounds touching on cool, soundwashy electro house and drop-and-whizzing dubstep. New single “Limitless” features powerful soaring vocals by Delaney Jane, and is available for free download at soundcloud.com/adventureclub. (Amphitheatre, Ybor City)
The Jukebox Romantics with The Horribles, The Antidon'ts Five-piece punk-howling Jukebox Romantics hail from New York and hit town fresh on the heels of issuing a debut 7-inch on Jailhouse Records, Plot Points, that was produced by Bouncing Souls guitarist Pete Steinkopf and takes undeniable influence from that band’s sonic stylings. The Jukebox Romantics also play Pegasus Lounge in Tampa on Saturday. (Mic's, St. Petersburg)
