What a weekend for music lovers in the Tampa Bay area. Did everyone get out and enjoy Gasparilla Music Festival? It sure appears that way. I didn't make it this year, but I was downtown yesterday and it was buzzing. Let's try to continue keep that buzz going and get right to this week's Tune-Up.
Soulwax has put together their first album in more than a decade, in the form of a soundtrack for new indie film Belgica. It touches on everything from indie-rock to electronica to hardcore punk. For the WTU, I selected "How Long" by The Shitz; recommended if you like Franz Ferdinand.
Avant rock supergroup Nevermen released their self-titled LP earlier this year and the remixes have started in earnest. Electronic legends Boards of Canada were tapped to do a remix of "Mr. Mistake," and it's superb, marked by the drifting synths that have become BoC's go-to. Often years go by before we get new material from the reclusive BoC, so use this remix wisely.
I've been hooked on New York indie-rockers Caveman since I saw them perform an opening set for Toro Y Moi. Their self-titled sophomore effort was so engrossing from start to finish that it still remains in my rotation. "Human" is the second single off their upcoming record, Otero War (due out this summer). The first two singles have proven more uptempo than anything off Caveman, which makes for an interesting change of pace and one that I'm not unhappy about. In fact, it makes me eager to hear the rest of the finished product.
