American Babies journey to New World

A country-rock gem patterned after The Byrds' and Flying Burritos Brothers' finest work but with more of a rock edge, American Babies' self-titled debut, released last month, brims with warmth, intelligence and sweet melodies. Philly singer/songwriter/bandleader Tom Hamilton lends his supple, slightly raspy voice to a collection of songs that address sadness without ever getting sappy. A dynamic roots affair, the songs are fleshed out by piano, strings, lap steel and the occasional electric guitar blast.

American Babies w/Ronny Elliott/Tailgunner Joe and the Earls of Slander, 9 p.m. Thurs., May 1, New World Brewery, Ybor City, $7.
